Anrealage
ANREALAGE was founded in 2003 by Kunihiko Morinaga in Tokyo. The name combines 'A real – un real – age', and the brand's two-decade thesis has been to use clothing as a vehicle for technological and conceptual experiments that other Japanese designers don't attempt: photochromic fabrics that change colour in UV light, garments that change shape with body temperature, the 'low pixel' series (clothing constructed of large discrete cubes), the spherical Y2K-era padded forms.
The ANREALAGE vocabulary is built around scientific collaboration: Morinaga works closely with textile researchers, light-engineering specialists, and Japanese materials laboratories. The brand has joined the official Paris Fashion Week schedule since 2014; its shows are essentially research presentations, with garments demonstrating phenomena rather than (just) selling silhouettes. The Louis Vuitton x ANREALAGE collaboration in 2023, in which Morinaga's UV-reactive fabrics were applied to LV's monogram canvas, was a major moment.
The brand operates from a Tokyo studio, has shown at Paris Fashion Week consistently, and has won numerous awards including the LVMH Prize finalist position. Morinaga remains creative director and continues to publish research alongside seasonal collections. Few Japanese designers have so consistently positioned themselves at the intersection of fashion and serious technical experimentation.
