Danner

Founded
1932
Founder
Charles Danner
Danner was founded in 1932 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin by Charles Danner as a heavy work-boot company supplying logging and forestry crews in the Pacific Northwest. The company relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1936, where it has been headquartered ever since. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce hand-built, USA-made, leather-and-vibram work and outdoor boots at a quality level that could be resoled multiple times across decades of use. The Danner vocabulary settled around several iconic boot patterns: the Mountain Light (a 1979 mountaineering-derived boot that became the brand's signature, featuring full-grain leather and Gore-Tex), the Mountain 600 (a more contemporary hiking iteration), the Bull Run (a 6-inch work boot in the moc-toe tradition), and the Acadia (a tactical military-derived 8-inch boot). The brand has manufactured for the US Marine Corps, US Forest Service, and various law-enforcement agencies for decades. Danner is owned by LaCrosse Footwear Inc., which itself was acquired by ABC-Mart (the Japanese footwear retailer) in 2012. The brand operates flagship retail in Portland (NW 23rd Avenue, Powell's Books building), New York (Lafayette Street), Tokyo (Aoyama), and through specialty outdoor retailers globally including Snow Peak, REI, Tower Tokyo, and the major US outdoor specialty chains. The Portland factory continues to hand-build the higher-tier USA Made line.
