John Smedley

Founder
John Smedley, Peter Nightingale
John Smedley was founded in 1784 in Lea Mills, Derbyshire, England by John Smedley as a small textile mill producing cotton and wool yarn for the regional clothing industry. The company progressed through the 19th century into producing finished knitwear, with the Lea Mills factory becoming one of the earliest dedicated fully-fashioned knitwear factories in the UK. The brand's foundational thesis settled in the late-Victorian period: produce the highest-grade fully-fashioned knitwear possible — Sea Island cotton, Merino wool, cashmere — at the level of craftsmanship that would last for decades of wear. The John Smedley vocabulary has remained anchored to the same core proposition for over 240 years: fully-fashioned knitwear (the panel-shape construction that produces no waste fabric, an obsessively-traditional method that few European knitwear factories still operate), the iconic 'Sea Island Cotton' fine-gauge T-shirt and polo, classic Merino-wool roll-neck and crewneck pullovers, and a colour palette that runs from neutral cream, navy, charcoal, and bone to seasonal saturated colours in the same fully-fashioned construction. The brand has done long-running collaborations with Margaret Howell, Norse Projects, Beams Plus, Drake's, MR PORTER, and Aimé Leon Dore. John Smedley is family-owned and managed by the eighth generation of the Smedley family from the original Lea Mills factory in Derbyshire, which continues to manufacture all the brand's product (one of the last remaining fully-fashioned-knitwear factories in the United Kingdom). The brand operates flagship retail at the Lea Mills factory shop, London (Piccadilly Arcade, Brook Street), Tokyo (Aoyama, Daikanyama), Hong Kong, plus international wholesale through MR PORTER, MATCHES, Beams Plus, Drake's, and a wide global distribution. Few British heritage knitwear brands have remained so continuously family-controlled and factory-anchored across 240 years.
