Keen was founded in 2003 in Portland, Oregon by Martin Keen, Rory Fuerst, and a small American outdoor-footwear design team as a deliberately-engineered hybrid sandal-and-hiking-shoe brand specifically focused on what the founders described as 'a deliberately-functional hybrid outdoor-footwear vocabulary anchored to closed-toe protective hiking-sandal construction.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2003 American-anchored 'hybrid outdoor-footwear' brands, with the iconic Keen Newport closed-toe sandal anchoring the broader brand cultural position.
