Lowa Sportschuhe was founded in 1923 in Jetzendorf, Bavaria by Lorenz Wagner as a small Bavarian mountaineering-footwear workshop specifically focused on producing hand-built leather mountaineering boots for the local Bavarian-Alps mountaineering community. The brand has been continuously operating from the same Bavaria-region workshop for over 100 years and is one of the longer-continuously-operating German mountaineering-footwear brands.
The Lowa vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Lowa Renegade Gore-Tex Mid hiking boot (the brand's defining hiking-boot product since 1997 — widely considered one of the best-selling hiking boots globally), the Lowa Mountain Expert mountaineering-boot programme (a defining 1990s-era heavy-load mountaineering boot used on multiple Everest and 8,000-metre-peak ascents), the Tibet GTX heavy-load mountaineering variant, various technical-leather mountaineering and approach-shoe variations, and a colour palette anchored to natural-tan leather, oxblood, military-olive, washed-charcoal, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-yellow safety colour combinations.
The brand is owned by Tecnica Group (the Italian outdoor-and-ski conglomerate that also owns Tecnica, Nordica, Blizzard Skis, Moon Boot, and Rollerblade). Lowa Sportschuhe operates flagship retail in Jetzendorf (the brand's home factory shop and museum), Munich, plus international wholesale through specialist mountaineering-and-outdoor retailers globally including REI, Backcountry, the broader US-and-European outdoor specialty retailer network (Globetrotter Germany, Mountain Warehouse UK, MEC Canada), the substantial Japanese mountaineering specialty distribution including Snow Peak and Beams Plus, and the broader 'gorpcore' streetwear specialty retailers. The brand has been one of the most rigorously committed German mountaineering-footwear brands across the post-1923 generation.
