Meindl was founded in 1683 in Kirchanschöring, Bavaria by Petrus Meindl as a small Bavarian mountaineering-footwear workshop specifically focused on producing hand-built leather mountaineering boots for the local Bavarian-Alps mountaineering community. The brand has been continuously operating from the same Kirchanschöring workshop for over 340 years — making Meindl the oldest continuously-operating German mountaineering-footwear brand and one of the oldest continuously-family-controlled European craft businesses still operating under its founding name. The Meindl vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Meindl Bhutan heavy-load mountaineering boot programme (the brand's defining high-altitude mountaineering product since the 1970s), the Meindl Vakuum hiking-boot programme, the Meindl Comfort Fit hiking-shoe line, various technical-leather mountaineering and approach-shoe variations, the iconic Meindl Eagle deer-stalker traditional Bavarian boot, and a colour palette anchored to natural-tan leather, oxblood, military-olive, washed-charcoal, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-yellow safety colour combinations.
