Mountain Hardwear was founded in 1993 in Berkeley, California by Marty Cody and a group of former Sierra Designs and The North Face engineers as a specialist American mountaineering-equipment workshop specifically focused on producing technically-engineered heavy-load mountaineering apparel for the broader American mountaineering-and-expedition community. The brand has been one of the defining post-1993 American-anchored 'heavy-load mountaineering' equipment brands. The Mountain Hardwear vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer ultralight down-jacket programme (the brand's defining product since 2010 — widely considered one of the best-selling ultralight down-jackets globally), the Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero heavy-load mountaineering-down-parka programme (used on multiple Everest and 8000-metre-peak ascents), the Mountain Hardwear Bishop's Pass high-altitude mountaineering tent programme, various Gore-Tex Pro alpine-and-ski-mountaineering shell-jacket variants, and a colour palette anchored to alpine-blue, military-olive, washed-charcoal, ecru, oxblood, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-yellow safety colour combinations.
