Norrøna

Country
Norway
Founded
1929
Founder
Jorgen Jorgensen
Norrøna was founded in 1929 in Lommedalen, Norway by Jørgen Jørgensen as a small Norwegian outdoor-equipment workshop specifically focused on producing heavy-canvas rucksacks and outdoor accessories for the Norwegian forestry, hunting, and mountaineering community. The brand expanded through the 20th century into producing technically-engineered ski-and-mountaineering outerwear, becoming one of the defining Scandinavian-anchored 'serious-mountain-gear' brands, with a particular reputation for the brand's deeply-technical Gore-Tex Pro shell construction. The Norrøna vocabulary settled around several specific product lines: the iconic Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro ski-touring shell (the brand's defining ski-and-mountaineering product, widely-regarded as one of the most technically-rigorous Gore-Tex Pro shells in the post-2000 outdoor industry), the Trollveggen alpine-climbing shell, the Falketind backcountry-skiing system, the Bitihorn lightweight summer-mountaineering line, the Svalbard Arctic-expedition shell, and a colour palette anchored to deep alpine-blue, military-olive, ecru, oxblood, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-yellow safety colour combinations. Norrøna remains independent and family-controlled by the Jørgensen family through four generations (Jørgen Jørgensen IV is the current CEO). The brand operates flagship retail in Oslo (Grünerløkka — the brand's home; Karl Johans Gate), Bergen, Stockholm, Munich, Innsbruck, Chamonix, Tokyo (Aoyama, the Norrøna Tokyo flagship), Seoul, plus international wholesale through the major ski-and-outdoor specialty retailers (REI, Backcountry, the European Globetrotter network, the Japanese Heliopolis Tokyo network) and the broader 'gorpcore' streetwear specialty retailers. Few European technical-outdoor brands have remained so continuously family-controlled while building such a technically-rigorous global outdoor-performance position.

Shop Secondhand

Archive and rare Norrøna pieces mostly circulate on the resale market. Japanese sites don't ship to China — buy via a proxy like Buyee; most Western sites ship internationally or are reachable with a US/EU forwarder.
