Rab was founded in 1981 in Sheffield, England by British mountaineer Rab Carrington, who began the brand as a small workshop producing hand-built down sleeping bags and expedition outerwear specifically for the British mountaineering community climbing in the harsh Scottish Highlands and continental Alpine conditions. The brand's foundational thesis was specific and survival-driven: produce the lightest, warmest, most-durable down-and-expedition gear technically possible — at the level of high-altitude alpinism performance specifications. The Rab vocabulary settled around several specific product categories: the iconic Rab Neutrino series of down sleeping bags (used on multiple Everest and 8,000-metre peak ascents through the 1990s-2020s), the Rab Microlight Alpine down jacket (one of the defining lightweight down jackets of the post-2000 mountaineering industry), the Rab Latok Alpine Gore-Tex Pro shell, the Rab Mythic Ultra down parka, and a colour palette anchored to alpine-blue, military-olive, washed-charcoal, ecru, oxblood, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-yellow safety colour combinations. The brand has supplied technical gear to the British Mountaineering Council, the British Antarctic Survey, and numerous Royal Geographical Society expeditions. Rab is owned by Equip Outdoor Technologies (the British outdoor-equipment parent company that also operates Lowe Alpine), which itself is held by Trilantic Capital Partners since 2017. The brand operates flagship retail at Equip Outdoor Headquarters in Alfreton (Derbyshire, UK), plus international wholesale through REI, Backcountry, the major US-and-European outdoor-specialty retailers, the long-running Snow Peak and Beams Plus relationships in Japan, and the broader 'gorpcore' streetwear specialty retailers. Few British-anchored technical-outdoor brands have remained so continuously focused on the alpine-mountaineering technical-performance specification while building a meaningful global outdoor-industry position.
