RO
ROA was founded in 2015 in Milan by an anonymous Italian-and-British design team (the brand has deliberately maintained creative-director anonymity since launch) as a technical-mountaineering-anchored footwear brand specifically focused on what the brand describes as 'mountain-craft engineering at contemporary luxury level.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific and technically rigorous: produce hand-built mountaineering and approach boots at the level of high-altitude expedition performance specifications, with the construction craft anchored to Italian Marche-region boot workshops and the design positioning treating the brand as a deliberately-functional alternative to the broader 'fashion-hiking-boot' category.
The ROA vocabulary settled around several specific footwear products: the iconic Andreas approach-hiking boot (the brand's defining product, a Vibram-soled leather-and-Cordura hiking boot with hand-stitched construction that became one of the most-collected technical-fashion boots of the 2018-2024 period), the Neal mid-cut variant, the Hikers technical mountain-bootie, the Cingino approach shoe, and a colour palette anchored to military-olive, washed-navy, washed-charcoal, ecru, natural-tan leather, oxblood, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red-and-orange safety colour combinations.
The brand is independent and held by the anonymous Italian-British design team plus institutional Italian luxury investors. ROA operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, END., Dover Street Market, Antonioli, GR8, Mytheresa, the major European luxury menswear specialty retailers, the long-running Beams Plus and Nepenthes Japanese-distribution relationships, and a wide international wholesale presence. The brand has been one of the defining post-2015 'gorpcore-luxury' footwear brands, with the deliberately-anonymous brand-architecture specifically anchoring the brand inside the post-2018 'technical-research-fashion' conversation.
