Stone Island Shadow Project was launched in 2009 in Ravarino, Italy by Stone Island as a deliberately-experimental technical-anchored sub-line of the Stone Island main-line house, in creative collaboration with the Italian designer Errolson Hugh of Acronym (Hugh anchored the sub-line as creative director from 2009-2017 and again from 2024). The line's foundational thesis was specific and technically rigorous: produce a deliberately experimental technical-fabric-and-hardware sub-line that took the Stone Island main-line vocabulary into a more contemporary techwear-meets-tactical direction. The Stone Island Shadow Project vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: technical-fabric outerwear with deliberately experimental hardware-and-strap construction, the brand's iconic Shadow Project compass badge (a distinct sub-line marker that distinguishes Shadow Project product from main-line Stone Island), deconstructed mountaineering-and-tactical-derived jackets and vests, the brand's recurring use of bonded-membrane, recycled-nylon, dyna-mesh, and thermo-sensitive fabrics, and a colour palette anchored to military-olive, washed-navy, oxblood, washed-charcoal, ecru, plus the Shadow Project recurring use of natural-undyed and washed-cream tones. Hugh's 2017-2024 departure (he left to focus on Acronym) was filled by an internal Stone Island design team before his 2024 return as creative director. Stone Island Shadow Project is a sub-line of Stone Island, the publicly-listed Italian luxury menswear conglomerate (owned by Moncler Group since 2020 for approximately €1.15 billion). The line distributes through every Stone Island flagship store globally plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, the broader European luxury menswear specialty retailers, and a wide Asian wholesale presence including the Boontheshop and Lane Crawford networks. The Shadow Project has been one of the defining post-2009 'techwear-luxury' sub-lines.
