If we’ve learned anything covering knives, multi-tools and EDC items over the past several years, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Some of the latest news in the space certainly meets that criteria, as two intriguing brands, Montana Knife Company and Tecovas, get in on the folding blade action.

Meanwhile, stalwarts such as Civivi, CRKT and Knafs step things up with impressively premium releases.

See what we mean and so much more below.

Civivi Wellmax

A limited-edition design, the Wellmax is the folding version of Civivi’s Maxwell fixed blade, created through sheer popular demand. However, this is not just a folding version of that knife; it’s an upgrade in many ways. While it retains the same signature chunky blade with its fuller groove, the handle is very different, swapping its G-10 scales for aluminum with either clear Lexan or yellow Ultem inlays (both of which allow users to see the skeletonized interior. Even the blade steel has been upgraded, however slightly, swapping D2 for 14C28N. All told, it’s a worthy reinterpretation that offers freshness to a beloved design.

Montana Knife Company The Montana

The Montana is the first-ever folding knife from MKC, and the outfit poured its precision-oriented, made in USA-quality outlook into the sub-three ounce liner lock folder. Designed with a 3.25 inch trailing point, stonewashed Magnacut blade and G10 handle with 3D-milled micro-texture, the Montana is the next step in the brand’s evolution. All titanium hardware and thoughtful details, including the functional inlaid arrowhead in the handle, complete the package.

Buck Knives 724 Mustang

What happens when you combine some of Buck’s fan-favorite traditional elements with a modern, affordable knifemaking approach? You get the 724 Mustang. With a silhouette that hearkens to the knives that made Buck famous and that classic back lock mechanism, it pays tribute to its origins. However, its lightweight aluminum handle and workhorse 420HC steel combine to make an incredibly budget-friendly, lightweight EDC knife ready to tackle even the most demanding tasks.

Small Field Duty by Liong Mah Design

While the SFD is a more compact version of Liong Mah’s popular Field Duty, it departs from that silhouette in significant ways. The three-inch drop-point MagnaCut blade is brandished and retracted via the renowned designer’s first-ever crossbar lock and thumb stud (with a nail nick offering a third deploy option). Spring tension can be adjusted and the handle can be swapped for carbon fiber or Ultem with a T8 torx bit, though the stock titanium scales look mighty fine as is.

Tactile Turn Clip Action Pen

After years of feedback, Tactile Turn finally has a solution for its pocket clips. The Texas-based manufacture of precision-machined writing utensils releases the Clip Action, a titanium bolt-action-style pen that combines the bolt deployment mechanism with the clip itself. However, instead of being too loose or too tight, the pocket clip hovers just above the shell with the perfect tolerance, achieved through a new meticulous machining process. It has a similar in-hand feel as the brand’s previous offerings and is available in three finishes.

CRKT Squid II (2496WK)

The super-sized successor to Lucas Burnley’s beloved Squid takes the silhouette to another level courtesy of a a black stonewashed 2.68-inch spear-point blade made of M390 super steel and a handle made of rich Santos mahogany. Deployment comes via the thumb stud or rear flipper, with the blade held in place by a sturdy liner lock.

CRKT Squid II (2496W)

What you might call the Squid II 2496WK’s fraternal twin adopts an identical silhouette, specs, deployment and locking mechanism. The big points of difference are that its 2.68-inch spear-point M390 blade features a traditional stonewash, and the handle is made of a light, grainy olive wood.

Tecovas Bone Ranch Knife

The Tecovas x Bear & Son Cutlery Bone Ranch Knife combines minimalist styling, dependable materials and a genuine bone handle that offers natural variation, making each knife one of a kind.

Tecovas Mesquite Trapper Knife

The Tecovas x Bear & Son Cutlery Mesquite Trapper Knife draws on heritage work designs, and offers a no-nonsense, lightweight knife constructed to take on everyday tasks.

Böker Plus Overnighter

Böker Plus’s Overnighter is an interesting knife because, if you don’t know better, a passing glance might suggest its a traditional style. Granted, this is largely because of its burl wood handle and the texture of the upper portions of the blade, both of which hearken to traditional Scandinavian outdoor fixed blades. However, the overall silhouette and steel are pretty thoroughly modern. The full-tang blade is D2, a modern workhorse material and the shape is more in line with contemporary bushcraft shapes, favoring handle ergonomics and a versatile blade shape.

Finch Knife Co. Gooseneck

Finch’s latest knife is inspired by an underappreciated industrial element: the trailer hitch from which it borrows its name. Like that hitch, this knife is hard-working and can take a beating, as it boasts a 14C28N clip-point blade measuring 2.75 inches and a handle with a stainless steel framelock base. However, the knife is much more eye-catching than its namesake, courtesy of its unique trio of handle scale options: abalone, mother of pearl and yellow jigged bone. That’s style and substance all wrapped into one.

Knafs Capcom

For a long time, Knafs has championed relatively affordable, hard-working EDC knives, particularly across its fan-favorite Lander series. But the Capcom represents a brave new frontier for the brand, as it represents its first-ever premium offering. It’s safe to say Knafs absolutely nailed it with its Airstream-like Art Deco styling, M390 sheepsfoot blade (shoutout to the fuller deployment) and button lock aluminum handle. It’s a good deal pricier than most of the brand’s other offerings, but it has the chops to back it up (pun intended).

CRKT Minimalist Nessmuk (2375W)

Honoring its namesake, American writer and early conservationist George Washington “Nessmuk” Sears, the Alan Folts-designed utility knife features a deep-bellied, strong-tipped 2.98-inch blade, three finger choils for a surprisingly secure grip and a sheath compatible with belt or neck carry. This limited-run edition boasts a black stonewash 12C27 steel business end, stabilized black and bronze wooden handle scales and a matching bronze fob.
