For those of you born with a love for both dogs and water, you know how unmatched a day spent on the beach with your four-legged friend truly feels. Thankfully, there are still waterfront parks where your pup can roam off leash and you can unwind without the stress of watching the clock or your dog, too intensely.
As a Pacific Northwest native, I consider Cannon Beach, Oregon, the gold standard of dog-friendly beach towns. There, like at the other destinations on this list, the joy of spending time by the water is equally shared between pets and their humans. Whether it’s playing fetch, running the coastline, or mingling with other pet owners and furry friends—there’s something so special about a place where we can co-exist, relax, play, and experience the outdoors together.
If you’re on a quest to find dog-friendly beaches, here are seven of the best coast to coast.
Fort De Soto and Jupiter Dog Parks, Florida
DeSoto Park
De Soto Park is about a 30-minute drive west of Tampa. It’s a well-loved dog beach to Floridians, but also a tourist destination due to the historic coastal defensive post present there used during the Spanish-American and Second World War. Soto Park’s “Paw Playground,” tucked away from the tourist hub, has two leash-free locations that are two football fields long. One area is designated for larger pups, and the other for your smaller pets. Along with space to play and sand to roll around in, your pup will have access to cooling stations that include showers and dog-height water fountains. Clean-up bags are provided, too. The park is open seven days a week from 7 A.M. to sunset.
Jupiter Park
Jupiter Park, located directly on the Atlantic Ocean in northern Palm Beach County, boasts 2.5 miles of coastline where you and your dog can roam free. This area isn’t monitored, so the city asks that pet owners keep in mind common courtesies like leashing your pup until arriving at the beach and leaving no trace. Unlike De Soto, there isn’t a dog cooling station, so bring the necessary items to protect your pup from harsh elements—and watch out for strong tides.

Reviews around De Soto are mixed, with some dog owners saying it can get overly crowded and unsanitary for campers during busy weekends. Others say it’s a blast for those who love to connect with their pets, and the fishing and kayaking are major pluses. As for Jupiter, dog owners have dubbed it “dog haven,” and the beach has won the top spot for best dog beach in multiple outlets. Pet owners say the biggest bummer is the wood chips that cover more ground than grass.
When to Go

Ocean Beach Park
Ocean Beach Park is the original OG of dog parks in California and one of the first off-leash beaches in America. This freshwater haven at the mouth of the San Diego River is protected by the town council’s Dog Beach Committee that seeks to preserve a space where people and their pets can coexist for generations to come. Ocean Beach attracts beach lovers and surfers, some of whom throw their dogs on the board—and they’ve got serious skill. Locals say there’s plenty of parking and a delicious cafe nearby that serves breakfast sandwiches and acai bowls, on a pet-friendly patio.
Huntington Beach
Just off the Pacific Coast Highway is a mile-and-a-half stretch of sand famously known as Huntington Dog Beach, where pet owners can take their pups to run wild and free off-leash. The area is managed by the nonprofit Reservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, fighting to preserve a clean and fun space where humans and dogs can coexist. There are special events like Dad’s Day Out, where food trucks pull up to the beach, Doggy Valentine’s Day, and a Spring Fling pop-up.

From what I’ve seen, dogs love to play in the driftwood along the four-mile stretch of coastline, play fetch with their owners, or splash in the waves with new furry friends. In addition to the beach, there are hiking trails available, dog-friendly restaurants, and hotels, too. Locals ask all pet owners to keep their dog in sight, remove all waste, and carry along leashes just in case there are poor dog interactions.

Pet owners say Cannon Beach has unmatched freedom for humans and their pets. The one downside is the harsh elements of the sea. Locals strongly advise being cautious with the strong tides, rip currents, and large waves. Keep a close eye on your pup on stormy days.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park, New Mexico
Though dogs cannot be off-leash at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, park rangers often exercise discretion along less crowded, more remote areas of the beach. Reviews online from travelers state that it’s a very dog-friendly area where you’ll see many people swimming and playing with their dogs at will. This desert oasis located on the Rio Grande is in south-central New Mexico two hours from both Albuquerque and El Paso, and ten minutes from the town Truth or Consequences that hosts dozens of hot springs. At Elephant Butte you can boat, fish, and drive on the beach. And there are pet-friendly designed camping spots (from $10). Not interested in camping? You can stay for the day (from $5).

Montrose Dog Beach in Chicago, Illinois
Last, but not least is Montrose Dog Beach in Chicago, Illinois, right on Lake Michigan. Montrose Dog Owners Group (MonDog) is the original guardian of the beach, whose mission is to ensure Chicago residents and their canine friends have access to clean, safe beachland to have fun on. The nearly four acres are fenced in, and residents partake in monthly cleanups to keep the area enjoyable for everyone. There are pay-to-use wash stations for pet owners and their dogs, but the beach has free access. Note, if you aren’t a local, you’ll need to pay for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) tag for your dog (from $10), which signals that your dog is healthy and up to date on their vaccinations. This is strictly enforced by the city.

Pet owners love the shallow waters for their dogs to play in, the amenities, and the cleanliness of the park. They warn that there can be an overwhelming amount of high-energy, smaller dogs, and that large amounts of algae can wash up on the beach, which owners should watch out for.
