When Honda introduced the CRF450R back in 2002, the bike was a revelation on account of its weight and tractability. Being the lightest production four-stroke motocrosser of its day, it was instantly competitive, even against factory-supported racers.

In the time since, Honda’s ongoing updates have ensured the bike continues to stay relevant. Be it adding EFI, changing the chassis design or revising the suspension geometry, the Big Red keeps evolving the CRF, and in more ways than one.

Even with this kind of precedent, Honda is especially proud of what it’s prepared for the 450R as part of the upcoming model year. The brand is touting it as the biggest update to the bike in more than a decade, and it’s an overhaul that has implications for the rest of the CRF range.

A redesigned Unicam heart

Headlining the CRF450R’s changes for 2027 are an all-new engine and frame that Honda says were developed with direct input from HRC teams competing at the highest level.

In the case of the former, the brand claims the redesigned Unicam mill makes 10.3 percent more peak horsepower  and 3.7 percent more torque. Mind you, that’s while also coming in 17mm slimmer and nearly six pounds lighter than the engine in the outgoing model.

The changes cut deep, too. Along with giving the 449.5cc engine a larger bore and a shorter stroke, Honda also changed the piston and camshaft and tweaked the inlet and exhaust.

Moreover, the bike’s clutch system introduces a first-ever rubber damper-activated Back Torque Limiter (BTL) to improve rear-wheel traction.

Honda’s tweaks to the chassis are no less impactful. Altogether, the bike tips the scales some 10 pounds lighter than last year at just 238 pounds wet.

Moreover, in addition to a revised frame that shares only 30 percent of its design with its predecessor, the 2027 CRF450R rides on a fresh Showa suspension setup with a new rear shock and linkage ratio, and it comes with updated Nissin braking components for better stopping power.

Rider-friendly refinements aplenty

The refinements don’t stop there, either. Honda made a number of other meaningful updates to the CRF450R in the pursuit of improving both its ergonomics and its serviceability.

As such, you’ll find the bodywork brings more than a new livery design. To allow for greater freedom of movement on the bike, Honda updated the shrouds and reprofiled the seat and tank junction.

What’s more, the redesigned side covers allow the bike to be much more maintenance-friendly. Be it changing the air filter, replacing the rear wheel or adjusting the shock, Honda’s updated design allows for improved access and much more intuitive operation.

Add to that a robust electronics package bringing features like HRC Launch Control and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), and the only thing that makes the bike better is the availability of the Works Edition.

After all, beyond an eye-catching graphics package, it’s a treatment that brings a factory-level finish through touches like a hand-ported cylinder head, a Yoshimura exhaust, special ECU settings and a Hinson clutch basket, among various other changes.

Availability and pricing

If you fancy picking up a CRF450R for yourself, it’ll be available next month starting from $10,099. The Works Edition is slated for October, and it’ll slot in higher at $12,999.

Assuming you’re looking for something else, don’t fret. As part of its updates to the CRF450R, Honda made broad-sweeping changes to the entire CRF lineup. From the street-legal CRF450RL to the tiny CRF50F, it’s a range that rolls into 2027 with improvements aplenty.
