For the longest time, I had filed the Car Shoe brand and namesake product — originally designed, go figure, as driving shoes with rubber pebbling meant to grip car — under a very specific category of Italian nonchalance. In my mind, they belonged to silver-haired men with sun-worn skin, pressed linen shirts, and the sort of allure that made aging look expensive. Elegant as that may seemed, I was far from imagining myself wearing them. Until I did.

Upon seeing a properly roughened-up pair out in the wild, I realized the very qualities that initially dated them to me are actually what lends them their appeal. The silhouette is classic moccasin, of soft leather with minimal soles and that same svelteness I appreciate in, say, a skinny sneaker. In some ways, these have become my version of the latter.

My pair's a vibrant blue that I like to wear with matching socks, with different colored trousers for a sharp contrast. It probably borders on eccentric-Italian-uncle territory, but at this point, I’ve stopped seeing that as a bad thing. (I also own a brown fringed version that feels a little more understated, for lack of a better word, since understated might be pushing it.)

I've grown attached to my Car Shoes, no less because I find there's something very Prada about them (aside from the company belonging to the Prada Group). There are touches of Miuccia here, of that strand of intellectual quirkiness.

Cheap? No, but these slippers justify their price over time. Appropriate with shorts and pleated trousers, or a relaxed oversized shirt or full suit even, the Car Shoe inhabits that rare space within which the outfit it graces feels thoughtful without looking over-engineered.

These are the sort of loafers you — meaning I — laughed at at 19, but'll eventually want every color of a few years down the line.
