Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are officially moving forward with a live-action sequel to the 2000 holiday blockbuster How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The studio is actively developing the project with key creative forces from the original production currently in talks to make a return to Whoville.
The upcoming film aims to bring back global comedic icon Jim Carrey to reprise his legendary role as the green-furred titular character, alongside original director Ron Howard. While active discussions are currently ongoing and official deals have not yet been finalized, the project has already tapped a veteran writing trio to pen the screenplay. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel—highly recognized for their work on television series like Barry, Silicon Valley, and Veep—are attached to write the script.
The original 2000 feature film was a massive box office smash, pulling in over $350 million USD worldwide. While Carrey has stepped back from frequent acting roles in recent years, the actor previously noted he would be open to returning to the role if modern motion-capture technology could replace the grueling hours of prosthetic makeup required in the original film. Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer is slated to return as a producer, with Susan Brandt of Dr. Seuss Enterprises overseeing the project's development.
