Alexandre Mattiussi founded Ami in Paris in 2011, age 31, after working at Dior Homme under Hedi Slimane, Givenchy, and Marc Jacobs. His thesis was specific: build a French menswear house at a price point younger Parisians could actually afford, in a vocabulary that was unmistakably French (slim tailoring, knitwear, denim, sneakers) but rejected both the post-Hedi rock-star register and the heavy logo language of legacy luxury. The name (which means 'friend' in French) and the heart-A logo telegraph the brand's relationship to its customer. Mattiussi has run the house as creative director, CEO, and majority owner for over a decade — a rare degree of authorial control. The 2021 acquisition of a minority stake by Sequoia Capital China provided expansion capital without diluting his voice. Revenue passed €450M in 2024. What Ami has produced is one of fashion's quieter success stories of the 2020s. The Ami de Coeur sweatshirt is everywhere; the brand has expanded into womenswear, fragrance, and homeware; the Saint-Germain flagship in Paris and a growing network of stores (London, Milan, Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York) anchor the brand globally. Few designers have built such a successful business while remaining so personally identified with every product their house puts out.
