Bode was founded in New York in 2016 by Emily Adams Bode, a Parsons-trained designer whose family operated a textiles-restoration business. The brand's thesis is unique: reconstruct one-of-a-kind menswear from vintage quilts, antique linens, embroidered Indian textiles, and other found materials, in patterns and techniques that wouldn't survive modern industrial production. Each garment is essentially a piece of textile archaeology.
The Bode vocabulary settled around several signatures: the patchwork quilt jacket (every jacket made from a different antique quilt), embroidered jacquard shirts, hand-applied beading, and a colour-palette tied directly to American Folk and 19th-century European textile traditions. The brand opened its first standalone store on Hester Street in New York in 2019 and a Los Angeles flagship in 2021; women's collections launched in 2023. Bode won the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year in 2021, the first woman to do so.
The brand remains independent and is held by Bode and her partners. Production is largely in New York, where the Manhattan atelier processes vintage textile sources and reconstructs them into final garments. Stockists include Dover Street Market, SSENSE, and a curated handful of others. Few brands have so thoroughly committed to reuse-based luxury production at scale — and few have managed to maintain editorial reverence while reaching the kind of commercial scale Bode now operates at.
