Aspesi was founded in 1969 in Legnano, Italy by Alberto Aspesi, who began with a small workshop producing shirts and gradually expanded into outerwear, knitwear, and a complete casual-luxury offering. The brand's foundational thesis was specifically Italian-pragmatic: produce technical outerwear and everyday clothing at the highest possible level of fabric and construction, without runway showmanship or season-driven graphic-design urgency. The Aspesi vocabulary settled around several signatures: the iconic Field Jacket (a M-65-derived silhouette reproduced in Italian-milled cottons and waxed canvas), the lightweight quilted Vest, hand-finished trench coats, technical down jackets, and a colour palette of muted oxblood, ivy green, midnight, and ecru. Alberto Aspesi died in 2018; the brand has been continued by his daughter Lawrence Steele as creative director alongside a stable design team. Aspesi remains independent and family-controlled. Production is overwhelmingly Italian — the Legnano headquarters, the Como silk works for shirting, and various small Italian outerwear ateliers. The brand operates flagships in Milan (Via San Pietro all'Orto, Via Sant'Andrea), Rome (Via del Babuino), Tokyo (Aoyama), and a smaller set of international partners. Few Italian heritage brands have stayed so quietly committed to a single product proposition over fifty years while resisting the conglomerate-acquisition path that defines so much of contemporary Italian luxury.
