Founder
Brunello Cucinelli
Brunello Cucinelli was founded in 1978 by Brunello Cucinelli, an Italian entrepreneur who had abandoned engineering studies to start a cashmere knitwear business in Solomeo, a medieval village in Umbria. The thesis was specific: produce coloured cashmere knitwear — at a time when cashmere was almost exclusively beige or natural — for the elevated-leisure market that traditional Italian luxury didn't yet serve. The brand's vocabulary has remained intact for forty-five years: muted-but-saturated cashmere knit (cardigans, sweaters, polos), drape-heavy linen and wool tailoring, suede chukka boots, and an aesthetic that occupies the space between American Ivy League and Italian sprezzatura. Production has remained in Solomeo, where Cucinelli has spent roughly fifty million euros restoring the medieval village he calls home — the Forum delle Arti theatre, the philosophical school, the company's own cashmere academy, the renovated village fountain. Workers are paid above-market wages and entitled to long lunch breaks. Brunello Cucinelli went public on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2012 (Cucinelli's family retains majority control). The company crossed €1.2B in revenue in 2024. Cucinelli himself, now 71, has published essays on what he calls 'humanistic capitalism' and has been the subject of profiles in the New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal, and many others. Few founders are as visibly philosophical about their own commercial practice as Cucinelli — and few luxury houses bear the imprint of a single moral architecture so completely.
