Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first store in San Sebastián in 1917 at 22, fled the Spanish Civil War for Paris in 1937, and over the next four decades reshaped the silhouette of 20th-century couture: the babydoll dress, the cocoon coat, the sack dress, the seven-eighths sleeve. Christian Dior called him 'the master of us all'. He shuttered the maison in 1968 when ready-to-wear made what he considered a meaningful continuation impossible. The brand sat largely dormant until Kering acquired it in 2001 and Nicolas Ghesquière revived it with archive-aware boldness, then Alexander Wang and Demna Gvasalia each refracted it through their own lenses. Demna's tenure (2015–2024) was particularly consequential: he made Balenciaga the first true memetic luxury house — a 7-inch Crocs platform, an IKEA-blue Trash Pouch, the dystopian SS22 show inside a snow globe — while the house quietly became the largest by revenue in the Kering portfolio. In 2024 Pierpaolo Piccioli took over creative direction from Valentino, signaling a return to couture craft and a softening of the trolling tone. Across every reinvention, the constant has been Balenciaga's willingness to attack its own assumptions — an inheritance directly traceable to a Basque cutter who shaped a coat over and over until he was satisfied with how it stood up off the body.
