Emerging Independent
Cole Buxton
Cole Buxton was founded in 2014 in London by Cole Buxton, who graduated from Loughborough University with a sports-design degree and began the brand as an Instagram-first vintage-gymwear curation project. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: rebuild the 1970s American collegiate-and-gym aesthetic — heavyweight cotton sweatshirts, cropped sweatpants, plain T-shirts in stonewashed colours — as premium contemporary menswear, at a £100-£200 price tier well above mass-market but accessible enough for the gym-and-luxury overlap audience.
The Cole Buxton vocabulary settled around several specific products: the CB Sportswear heavyweight cotton crewneck and hoodie in the brand's signature stone-washed colour palette (sage, brick, ecru, washed navy, soft charcoal), the relaxed-fit cotton T-shirt, the cropped track pant, and the early-2020s addition of full athletic-derived tailoring (rugby-shirt-as-blazer, knit-collared polos). The brand's social-first marketing voice — anchored to gym-and-vintage-aesthetic photography — became a defining example of how a 2010s social-native brand could read as both premium and aspirational without traditional fashion-press marketing.
The brand is independent and held by Buxton. Cole Buxton operates a flagship in London (Mortimer Street, Fitzrovia), Paris (Le Marais), plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Selfridges, and the major US specialty retailers. Few British menswear brands of the late 2010s have built such a focused stonewashed-essentials vocabulary while becoming culturally legible across both gym-culture and fashion-press audiences.
