Demil was founded in 2017 in Shanghai by Chinese designer Mike Sun as a contemporary luxury menswear-and-streetwear brand specifically focused on what Sun described as 'a deliberately-Chinese architectural-tailoring vocabulary anchored to contemporary Shanghai youth culture and broader East-Asian streetwear-meets-luxury fashion-week positioning.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2017 Shanghai-anchored contemporary-luxury-streetwear brands. The Demil vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deconstructed cotton-and-wool tailored separates with deliberately-architectural proportional construction, hand-printed silk and cotton shirts with deliberately-conceptual Chinese-cultural-reference graphic motifs, the brand's iconic technical-fabric outerwear with deliberately-experimental hardware-and-strap construction, deconstructed denim with deliberately-streetwear-hybrid construction, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, and the iconic East-Asian-fashion-week aesthetic colour combinations. The brand has presented at Shanghai Fashion Week each season since 2018. The brand is independent and held by Sun. Demil operates flagship retail in Shanghai (Anfu Road — the brand's home neighbourhood) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more quietly disciplined post-2017 Shanghai-anchored 'street-luxury-Chinese-architectural-tailoring' brands.
