Gymshark
Gymshark was founded in 2012 in Birmingham, England by Ben Francis (then a 19-year-old University of Aston student working as a Pizza Hut delivery driver) and his school friend Lewis Morgan. The brand began as a small print-on-demand fitness-apparel operation run from Francis' parents' garage, then transitioned to a direct-to-consumer YouTube-and-Instagram-led brand specifically aimed at the gym-and-bodybuilding social-media community that was crystallising in the early 2010s.
The Gymshark vocabulary settled around several specific products: technical-fabric gym training tops and shorts with the iconic Gymshark logo, the Vital Seamless Leggings (the brand's defining women's bottom, with deliberately body-contouring construction), the Apex Limitless joggers (the men's tapered-leg signature), various gym-anchored sports bras, T-shirts, and accessories, and a colour palette anchored to black, navy, dark grey, plus seasonal saturated colours. The brand's marketing voice has been heavily anchored to Instagram-and-YouTube fitness influencer partnerships, with hundreds of athlete partnerships rather than traditional celebrity endorsements.
Gymshark is independent and held by Francis plus a minority investment from General Atlantic (a US private-equity firm) that bought a 21 percent stake in 2020 at a valuation of approximately £1B. The brand operates flagship retail in London (Regent Street, the brand's first physical store, opened 2022), plus an extensive direct-to-consumer e-commerce platform shipping to 230+ countries. The brand's growth — reportedly crossing £500M annual revenue in 2023 — has made Gymshark one of the defining UK-anchored sports-apparel brands of the post-2010 generation.
