Hender Scheme

Hender Scheme was founded in 2010 in Tokyo by Ryo Kashiwazaki as a leather-anchored footwear-and-accessories brand built around an unusual core practice: vegetable-tanned natural leather reproductions of the most-iconic athletic footwear silhouettes (the Nike Air Force 1, the Adidas Stan Smith, the Nike Air Jordan 1, the Reebok Insta Pump Fury) made entirely in Tokyo by Kashiwazaki and his small workshop team. The brand's foundational thesis was specific and conceptually rigorous: take the cultural-iconography of mass-produced athletic footwear and rebuild it in the most archetypal traditional-leather-craft language, as a deliberate act of slow-craft commentary. The Hender Scheme vocabulary settled around several specific products: the 'manual industrial products' line (the leather-reproduction sneakers), the brand's regular signature shoes (the Manual Industrial Products 09 derby, the Caminando boot, the Piano slip-on), various leather-goods (the Square Mini Bag, the Helmet Bag), and a colour palette anchored to natural-tan vegetable-tanned leather plus the various oxidising patinas that this leather develops with wear. The vegetable-tanned leather darkens and ages with use, becoming a different colour over time — a core part of the brand's craft proposition. The brand is independent and held by Kashiwazaki. Hender Scheme operates flagship retail in Tokyo (Ebisu, Sukima) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, GR8, Dover Street Market (a particularly close relationship), MR PORTER, Antonioli, Lane Crawford, and a small set of carefully chosen avant-garde-luxury specialty retailers globally. Few Japanese brands of the post-2010 generation have built such a culturally specific slow-craft vocabulary while becoming a globally legible reference point in the streetwear-meets-leather-luxury conversation.
