HUF was founded in 2002 in San Francisco by Keith Hufnagel, a New York-born professional skateboarder who had relocated to San Francisco in the late 1990s and built a reputation as one of the defining street skaters of the 1990s-2000s SF-and-NY skate scene. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a skate-anchored streetwear and footwear line that read as authentic to the underground skate culture, with a deliberate refusal of the polished-brand-marketing approach of the larger US skate brands. The HUF vocabulary settled around several specific products: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic 'HUF' typography, skate-graphic decks under the HUF Worldwide skate-team programme, the long-running HUF × Pepsi, HUF × Hello Kitty, and HUF × Penthouse capsule collaborations, the iconic HUF Plantlife socks (which became a culturally-specific 2010s product after the brand's marijuana-leaf-graphic line became a viral skate-streetwear category), and skate-anchored footwear (the HUF Classic Lo, the HUF Worldwide). Keith Hufnagel died in September 2020; the brand has been continued by his widow Anna Hufnagel and the original HUF team. The brand is owned by Macnica Inc., the Japanese conglomerate that acquired HUF in 2014. HUF operates flagship retail in San Francisco (the original Hayes Street store), New York (Ludlow Street), Los Angeles (Fairfax Avenue), Tokyo (Aoyama, Shibuya), Osaka, plus international wholesale through skate-specialty retailers globally including Supreme stores, Slam Jam Milan, the broader skate distribution network in Europe, Asia, and Australia. HUF has been one of the defining US-anchored skate-streetwear brands of the post-2000 generation.
