Karhu was founded in 1916 in Helsinki, Finland by Hugo Niskanen as a small workshop producing athletic shoes for the Finnish national track-and-field team. The brand expanded through the 1920s-1940s to become one of the defining Finnish-anchored athletic footwear brands, with the iconic Karhu 'M' logo (a stylised letter M for 'Mestari,' meaning 'champion' in Finnish, and also a reference to the Finnish word for bear, 'karhu') becoming one of the recognisable signs of pre-war European athletic culture. The brand notably sold the three-stripe trademark to Adidas in 1952 for approximately 1,600 euros and two bottles of whiskey. The Karhu vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Karhu Champion Air (the brand's defining running silhouette, originally designed in 1976 as one of the first air-cushioned running shoes), the Aria 95 (a 1995 silhouette that became a 2010s sneaker-collector favorite), the Fusion 2.0 (a 2009 silhouette that has been continuously updated), and the long-running Karhu × INVINCIBLE, Karhu × Sneakersnstuff, Karhu × Naked, Karhu × Patta, and Karhu × Goodhood collaboration programmes. The brand's revival has been one of the more interesting case studies of European heritage-athletic brand recovery in the post-2010 era. The brand is independent and held by Karhu Holding (a Finnish investor group that revived the brand in 2009 after multiple decades of operational dormancy). Karhu operates flagship retail in Helsinki (Aleksanterinkatu, the brand's home store), Stockholm, Tokyo (Daikanyama), plus international wholesale through the major sneaker-specialty retailers (END., Sneakersnstuff, Naked, Concepts, Foot Patrol) and a wide European, Japanese, and US distribution network. Few European heritage athletic brands have been so successfully revived in the post-2010 sneaker-revival period.
