Lee Jeans was founded in 1889 in Salina, Kansas by Henry David Lee as one of the founding-wave American workwear-and-denim manufacturers (alongside Levi Strauss & Co. and Wrangler). Lee introduced the iconic Lee 101 work-jean in 1924 — widely considered the first deliberately-engineered work-jean (with deeper-rise and reinforced-rivet construction designed for agricultural-labour use) — and the brand has been continuously producing denim from the same Kansas-and-broader-American operations for over 135 years. The Lee vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Lee 101 work-jean (the brand's defining 1924-pattern product, still in production with the original deeper-rise straight-leg construction), the Lee Storm Rider sherpa-lined denim jacket (the brand's defining 1933-pattern denim-jacket product), the Lee Buddy Lee workwear-aesthetic graphic-tee programme (anchored to the iconic Buddy Lee promotional-doll character introduced 1922), various heavyweight selvedge denim variants in shifting weights and treatments, and a colour palette anchored to natural-indigo (the brand's defining colour), washed-tan, oxblood, ecru, military-olive, plus the brand's recurring use of natural-undyed and authentic-American-workwear-aesthetic colour combinations. Lee is owned by Kontoor Brands (NYSE: KTB), the publicly-listed American denim conglomerate that also operates Wrangler (Kontoor was spun off from VF Corporation in 2019). The brand operates approximately 4,000 retail-and-wholesale points-of-distribution globally — with particularly strong representation in the US, Mexico, Japan, and the broader denim-revival specialty retailer network. The brand has done extensive contemporary collaborations including Lee × Tokito, Lee × Beams Plus, Lee × MASTERMIND JAPAN, Lee × Stüssy, and dozens of other heritage-Americana-revival collaboration partners. The Lee 101 has been one of the defining products of American workwear-denim heritage.
