Margaret Howell MHL
MHL by Margaret Howell is the lower-tier diffusion sub-line of Margaret Howell, the British luxury menswear-and-womenswear brand founded in 1972 in London by Margaret Howell. The MHL sub-line was launched in 1991 as the brand's deliberately-workwear-anchored and casually-cut diffusion sub-brand, with the main Margaret Howell line serving as the broader luxury-tailoring-and-knitwear offering.
The MHL by Margaret Howell vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic MHL Smock workwear-derived overshirt (the sub-line's defining product since the early 1990s — a heavyweight cotton-and-linen overshirt with the iconic Margaret-Howell-workwear-aesthetic patch-pocket construction), various MHL Loose Smock and Wide Trouser variants, hand-knitted British-mill cotton-and-wool sweaters, heavyweight British-mill chambray and cotton work-shirts, and a colour palette anchored to washed-navy, ecru, oxblood, military-olive, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of natural-undyed cotton and the iconic British-workwear-aesthetic colour combinations. Production is split between British workshops and selected European production partners.
The sub-line is part of Margaret Howell Ltd. MHL by Margaret Howell distributes through every Margaret Howell flagship store globally — anchored to London (Wigmore Street — the brand's home flagship), Edinburgh, Tokyo (Aoyama, Daikanyama, Ginza), Osaka, plus international wholesale through MR PORTER, MATCHES, Beams Plus, Nepenthes, Self Edge, Stag NY, the broader British-and-Japanese heritage-menswear specialty network, and a curated set of luxury menswear specialty retailers globally. The MHL sub-line has been one of the most consistently disciplined post-1991 British-anchored 'workwear-and-craft-revival' diffusion sub-lines.
