MARRKNULL
MARRKNULL was founded in 2018 in Shanghai by Chinese designer duo Tim Shi and Wenjun Yuan, both Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp graduates who launched the brand specifically focused on producing a contemporary Chinese-anchored fashion vocabulary at the intersection of post-1990s mainland Chinese popular culture, traditional Chinese textile motifs, and the Belgian-deconstruction tradition of their Antwerp training. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a Chinese fashion vocabulary that read as authentically rooted in Chinese-mainland everyday-aesthetic culture rather than as Chinese-export-styled product designed for Western consumption.
The MARRKNULL vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: oversized boxy outerwear with deliberately-printed Chinese-pop-culture references (Chinese cigarette packaging, 1990s Chinese supermarket signage, Chinese-mainland television aesthetic), deconstructed denim and workwear referencing Chinese-blue-collar uniforms, hand-printed silk shirts with traditional Chinese folk-art motifs rebuilt at contemporary luxury level, and a colour palette anchored to washed-charcoal, oxblood, soft-pink, washed-navy, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red and yellow (Chinese-flag colour references). The brand has presented at Shanghai Fashion Week each season since 2019 and was nominated for the LVMH Prize semi-finalist position in 2022.
The brand is independent and held by Shi and Yuan. MARRKNULL operates flagship retail in Shanghai (Anfu Road) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, Lane Crawford, Boontheshop, JOYCE Hong Kong, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more conceptually rigorous post-2015 Shanghai debuts, with the 'authentic-mainland-Chinese-aesthetic' framework specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary Chinese-fashion-design conversation that has been rewritten since 2020.
