Mishka
Mishka was founded in 2003 in Brooklyn by Mikhail Bortnik and Greg Rivera as a streetwear brand specifically focused on what the founders described as 'a deliberately-dark-and-occult-aesthetic NYC-streetwear vocabulary anchored to lowbrow-art and underground-music cultural references.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2003 NYC-anchored streetwear brands, with the iconic Mishka Adder Eye (Keep Watch) graphic anchoring the broader brand cultural position.
The Mishka vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic Adder Eye (Keep Watch) graphic and deliberately-lowbrow-art-aesthetic graphic-design references, deconstructed denim and workwear-derived streetwear trousers, the brand's iconic Mishka All-Over-Print programme (deliberately-saturated full-coverage graphic-print product), the long-running Mishka × Nike SB, Mishka × Mountain Dew, Mishka × Hannibal Buress, and Mishka × Big Boss collaboration capsules, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, washed-navy, ecru, oxblood, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, butter-yellow, and the iconic 2000s-Brooklyn-streetwear-aesthetic accent combinations.
The brand is independent and held by Bortnik and Rivera. Mishka operates a flagship retail concept in Brooklyn (Williamsburg — the brand's home neighbourhood) plus international wholesale through Dover Street Market, the broader US-and-European streetwear specialty distribution, and a substantial Japanese streetwear-specialty distribution network. The brand has been one of the defining post-2003 NYC-anchored '2000s-streetwear-foundational' brands.
