Founder
Setsumasa Kobayashi
Mountain Research was founded in 2007 in Tokyo by Setsumasa Kobayashi, the same designer who founded General Research (1993) and 40 Percent Against Rights (1990s collective). Mountain Research is Kobayashi's most considered project — a deeply researched response to American backpacking culture of the 1960s-70s, the Sierra Club era, the Whole Earth Catalog, and the early American outdoor industry that produced Kelty, Camp Trails, North Face, and Holubar. The vocabulary centres on garment-archive reconstruction: 1970s style Kelty backpacks reproduced in heavyweight canvas; Camp Trails-style frame packs; baker-tent-derived parka shapes; the brand's signature Anarcho-Cups (enameled steel mugs in primary colours, produced for the brand's annual Mountain Research camp gatherings). The garments are sold alongside a constant stream of Mountain Research camp accessories — folding chairs, lanterns, knives, axes — all designed in the same vocabulary. The brand operates a single flagship in Aoyama, Tokyo plus the annual Mountain Research Camp Festival (a curated outdoor event the brand stages in remote Japanese mountain regions). Kobayashi remains designer-in-chief. Few brands have so completely committed to a specific historical reference point — and few have built such a coherent customer culture around literal camping events as their primary marketing venue.

Archive and rare Mountain Research pieces mostly circulate on the resale market. Japanese sites don't ship to China — buy via a proxy like Buyee; most Western sites ship internationally or are reachable with a US/EU forwarder.
