Patta

Patta was founded in 2004 in Amsterdam by Edson Sabajo and Guillaume 'Gee' Schmidt as a small Surinamese-Dutch streetwear store at the corner of Zeedijk in Amsterdam's central district, opened with the explicit thesis of bringing the kind of streetwear inventory (Bathing Ape, Nike Air Max releases, Stüssy, BAPE) that was difficult to access in Amsterdam at the time. The name 'Patta' is a Surinamese-Dutch slang word for 'sneakers' that explicitly anchors the brand's identity to its Caribbean-Dutch cultural roots, with the brand subsequently expanding from retail-only operation into its own apparel brand by the late 2000s. The Patta vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic diamond-shape logo, the long-running Patta × Nike Air Max collaboration programme (Air Max 1, Air Max 90, Air Max 95, Air Max 97 Patta releases have been among the most-collected Air Max collaborations of the 2010s-2020s), Patta × adidas, Patta × Tommy Hilfiger, Patta × Diadora, and a continuous run of Patta × Asian-and-Latin-American-streetwear-brand collaborations, the iconic Patta Soundsystem cultural-programming partnerships, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, ecru, washed-navy, oxblood, and the brand's recurring use of saturated red. The brand is independent and held by Sabajo and Schmidt. Patta operates flagship retail in Amsterdam (Zeedijk — the original 2004 store; Da Costakade — the larger 2018 flagship), London (Soho), Milan (Brera, the Patta Milan store opened 2021), plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, and a wide European streetwear-specialty distribution. Few European streetwear brands of the post-2000 generation have built such a culturally specific Surinamese-Dutch-Caribbean vocabulary while remaining one of the defining European-streetwear-meets-Black-music cultural reference points.
