Rick Owens DRKSHDW was launched in 2005 in Paris as the casual-and-denim diffusion line of the Rick Owens main-line house, conceived as a deliberately-rugged, deliberately-worn streetwear-and-denim sub-line that would translate the main-line Rick Owens vocabulary into a more wearable, casually-cut, and accessibly-priced day-wear price tier. The diffusion-line thesis was specific: take the architectural-draped main-line proposition and rebuild it through workwear, denim, sportswear, and military-derived silhouettes — at a £200-£800 entry-luxury price tier compared to the £1,000-£5,000 main-line. The Rick Owens DRKSHDW vocabulary settled around several specific products: heavily-distressed and bleached selvedge denim with deliberately exaggerated dropped-crotch and tapered-leg cuts, technical-fabric drop-crotch sweatpants and joggers, deconstructed cotton sweatshirts and hoodies, the iconic DRKSHDW Mega Bumper boot (a chunky-soled work-derived combat boot), and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, washed-navy, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, and the brand's recurring use of natural-undyed and faded-indigo tones. Production splits between Italian and Eastern European workshops. DRKSHDW is part of the Rick Owens parent house, owned by the Rick Owens-Lazlo family company and operationally headquartered at the Place du Palais Bourbon flagship in Paris.
