Snow Peak
Snow Peak was founded in 1958 by Yukio Yamai in Sanjō, Niigata Prefecture — a city historically known for metalworking and tool manufacturing. Yamai, an avid mountaineer, had become frustrated by the poor quality of Japanese-made climbing hardware and started designing and producing his own gear, beginning with mountaineering pitons, then carabiners, then a gradual expansion into camping equipment as climbing's popularity grew.
The brand's defining moment came in the 1980s and 90s, when Snow Peak (now run by Yamai's son Tohru Yamai) pivoted toward what Tohru called 'auto camping' — a uniquely Japanese form of car-based outdoor leisure that prized aesthetic refinement and craftsmanship over backpacking minimalism. The titanium cookware, the Takibi fire pit, the Pack & Carry fireplace, the Land Lock tent — all became defining objects of contemporary Japanese camping culture. The Apparel line was added in the 2000s, applying the same precision to outdoor clothing.
Snow Peak operates flagship stores in Tokyo (Daikanyama, Marunouchi), Portland Oregon, London, Seoul, and at the Snow Peak Headquarters Campfield in Sanjō (a 75-acre operation that doubles as a campground, restaurant, and shop). The brand has expanded into hospitality (Snow Peak Glamping resorts) and remains family-controlled. Few outdoor brands have built such a complete cultural ecosystem around their product.
