SOPH. was founded in 1998 in Tokyo by Hirofumi Kiyonaga as a streetwear-anchored menswear brand specifically focused on what Kiyonaga described as 'sport-and-uniform-derived contemporary menswear.' The brand became one of the defining post-1995 Tokyo streetwear brands alongside WTAPS, NEIGHBORHOOD, and Visvim, with the iconic F.C. Real Bristol football-club sub-brand (launched 1999) anchoring the broader brand identity. The SOPH. vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: training-derived warm-up jackets and trousers in Japanese-mill technical fabrics, deconstructed cotton-and-nylon outerwear with deliberately military-and-uniform-derived construction, the brand's iconic SOPH. monogram typography product, the long-running F.C.
