Soshiotsuki

soshiotsuki was founded in 2017 in Tokyo by Japanese designer Soshi Otsuki, a former Bunka Fashion College graduate who launched the brand specifically focused on what Otsuki described as 'a contemporary Japanese-tailoring vocabulary that drew explicitly on traditional Japanese garment-construction traditions.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a contemporary menswear vocabulary that drew explicitly on pre-Meiji-era Japanese garment-folding traditions, kimono-construction craft, and the architectural-tailoring approach of post-1990 Japanese avant-garde menswear designers (Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe, the broader Tokyo avant-garde lineage). The soshiotsuki vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deconstructed Japanese-cotton-and-wool tailoring with deliberately kimono-derived construction (asymmetric front-overlap fastening, hand-finished raw-edge construction, deliberately-architectural fold-and-pleat detailing), hand-printed silk shirts referencing pre-Meiji-era Japanese textile motifs, the brand's iconic deconstructed-trench-coat product line, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of traditional-Japanese-dye indigo and natural-undyed cream. The brand presents at Paris Men's Fashion Week and Tokyo Fashion Week each season. The brand is independent and held by Otsuki. soshiotsuki operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, the broader Japanese department-store network (Beams, United Arrows, Ships, Nepenthes), and a curated set of luxury menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more conceptually rigorous post-2017 Tokyo-anchored Japanese-tailoring debuts, with the deliberately-pre-Meiji-Japanese cultural-positioning specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'cross-cultural-tailoring' conversation that has been continuously rewritten in Paris menswear since 2018.
