United Arrows was founded in 1989 in Tokyo by Osamu Shigematsu, a former senior buyer at BEAMS, who left to start what would become Japan's second major 'select shop' chain. The thesis matched the BEAMS model — curated multi-brand retail, own-brand products, and seasonal imports — but with a more European focus and a slightly older, more affluent customer in mind. The brand's product canon settled around tailored Italian-inflected suits (manufactured in Italy and Japan), heritage British knitwear references, accessible Japanese craft items, and a more polished, less Americana-driven aesthetic than BEAMS. Sub-lines include United Arrows & Sons (the higher-end men's line), BEAUTY&YOUTH UNITED ARROWS (the younger, more accessible diffusion), Steven Alan x UA, Drawer (women's premium), and several others. United Arrows operates around 200 stores across Japan and is publicly listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The Omotesando flagship, the BEAUTY&YOUTH on Cat Street, and the United Arrows & Sons store on Aoyama have become reference points for what Japanese-curated international fashion looks like at the elevated mid-luxury tier. Osamu Shigematsu retired from operational duties in 2017; the company is now led by his successors but remains independently controlled.

Archive and rare United Arrows pieces mostly circulate on the resale market. Japanese sites don't ship to China — buy via a proxy like Buyee; most Western sites ship internationally or are reachable with a US/EU forwarder.
