Volcom was founded in 1991 in Costa Mesa, California by Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall as a deliberately-counter-cultural snowboard-and-skate-streetwear brand specifically focused on what the founders described as 'a deliberately-Stone-and-Cowboy-aesthetic Californian counter-cultural streetwear vocabulary.' The brand has been one of the defining post-1991 Californian-anchored 'snowboard-and-skate-streetwear' brands, with the iconic Volcom Stone diamond-shaped logo anchoring the broader brand cultural position. The Volcom vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic Volcom Stone diamond-shaped logo and shifting seasonal counter-cultural graphic-design references, deconstructed denim and workwear-derived skate trousers, the brand's iconic Volcom snowboard-pant-and-jacket programme (the broader 1990s-snowboard-anchored product category — Volcom is one of the founding brands of the modern snowboard-apparel industry), the long-running Volcom × Spitfire, Volcom × Anti-Hero, Volcom × Element, and Volcom × Hockey Skateboards collaboration capsules, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, washed-navy, military-olive, oxblood, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, butter-yellow, and the iconic Californian-counter-cultural-aesthetic accent combinations.
