X-LARGE was founded in 1991 in Los Angeles by Adam Silverman, Eli Bonerz, and Beastie Boys member Mike D as one of the founding-wave LA-anchored streetwear brands alongside Stüssy, FUCT, and the broader early-1990s LA streetwear ecosystem. The brand has been one of the defining post-1991 American-anchored '1990s-streetwear-foundational' brands. The X-LARGE vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: heavyweight cotton tees and hoodies with the brand's iconic X-LARGE OG-Gorilla typography logo and shifting seasonal graphic-design references (the deliberately-Old-English-typography-and-cartoon-graphic-aesthetic visual language has been the brand's defining graphic-design signature since 1991), deconstructed denim and workwear-derived skate trousers, the brand's iconic XLARGE × Beastie Boys cultural-collaboration programme, the long-running X-LARGE × Nike SB, X-LARGE × adidas, X-LARGE × Vans, X-LARGE × New Era, and X-LARGE × Stüssy collaboration capsules, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, washed-navy, ecru, oxblood, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, butter-yellow, and the iconic 1990s-LA-streetwear-aesthetic accent combinations.
