Yarmouth Oilskins
Yarmouth Oilskins was founded in 1898 in Great Yarmouth, England by a partnership of local Norfolk-coast oilskin manufacturers as a small workshop specifically focused on producing heavy-cotton oilskin work-jackets and trousers for the local North Sea fishing fleet. The brand has been continuously operating from the same Great Yarmouth workshop for over 125 years — making Yarmouth Oilskins one of the oldest continuously-operating British oilskin manufacturers and one of only a handful of UK heritage workwear brands that have remained continuously committed to single-product-category specialisation.
The Yarmouth Oilskins vocabulary settled around several specific products: the iconic Yarmouth Work Jacket (the brand's defining product since the early 1900s — a heavyweight oiled-cotton jacket with the original pre-WWI fishing-industry-issue construction including patch-pocket-and-belt detailing, still in production with minor pattern updates), various heavyweight oiled-cotton work-trousers and bib-and-brace overalls, hand-stitched oilskin storm-coats, and a colour palette anchored to authentic-oiled-cotton tan (the brand's defining colour — a deliberately-uneven oxidised cotton tone), washed-navy, oxblood, ecru, plus the brand's recurring use of natural-undyed cotton tones. Production is entirely British at the Great Yarmouth workshop.
The brand is independent and family-controlled by the Yarmouth Oilskins family business. The brand operates with no permanent retail of its own (the brand has remained deliberately wholesale-and-direct-to-consumer-online), distributing through Beams Plus (the brand's defining Japanese-distribution partner), Nepenthes, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Self Edge, Stag NY, Brut Clothing, Old Town Clothing, S.E.H. Kelly, and a curated set of heritage-menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the most rigorously committed British heritage oilskin manufacturers, with the deliberately-single-product-category specialisation positioning the brand inside the broader 'British heritage workwear' conversation.
