Few people realize that Sperry’s CVO sneaker is prominently featured in one of the most recognizable and viewed television intros of all time.

Following a pan over a model town accompanied by a music box tune, a jazzy earworm of a diddy kicks in as a kindly gentleman enters his home, closets his jacket in favor of a full-zip cardigan and sits down to remove a pair of leather derbies.

The man, of course, is Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

After his dress shoes are playfully removed, he laces up a pair of Sperry CVO Sneakers, all while singing his welcoming theme song in a tranquil tone that comforted children for generations.

Mr. Rogers’ wardrobe was deliberately chosen to be both respectable and disarming. A cozy sweater over a shirt and tie and casual sneakers under formal slacks made the children’s television pioneer a “high-low” style icon long before that concept existed.

Todd Snyder and Sperry teamed up to pay homage to Mr. Rogers with a capsule collection featuring his two most iconic wardrobe pieces: the full-zip sweater and the CVO Sneakers.

A faithful reproduction

According to Todd Snyder, Mr. Rogers chose to wear Sperry CVO sneakers during filming because they allowed him to move quietly around the set.

In 1968, when the show began, he couldn’t have found a better option for that purpose. Paul Sperry invented the CVO Sneaker, which stands for Circular Vamp Oxford, in 1941 as a boating shoe, and it became the official sneaker of the US Navy during WWII.

The cotton canvas upper dried quicker and was more breathable than leather, while a siped rubber outsole provided firm traction, and high-wall rubber foxing helped protect the toes.

Todd Snyder and Sperry remain faithful to the 1960s model worn by Mr. Rogers with a washed cotton canvas upper and a thick rubber “bumper” on the foxing, accented with a colored stripe.

This special-edition CVO Sneaker comes in blue, Mr. Rogers’ apparent favorite, along with green, khaki and white. It has a custom chambray footbed with the Sperry logo beside the show’s logo.

Complete the look

Accompanying Mr. Rogers’ go-to sneakers is an homage to his iconic sweater collection. Two zip-up cardigans present a modern interpretation of the ones worn on the show.

It is a simpler knit than the hand-made sweaters Mr. Rogers pulled from his personal wardrobe. The body and sleeves are made with a half-cardigan knit and don’t feature any decorative cable weaves.

A double-layered, ribbed baseball collar, ribbed cuffs and ribbed waist match those from the show, and it has a “kissing” placket that hides the zipper.

The sweater is available in fire engine red, the color most commonly depicted on Mr. Rogers, and light blue.

Rounding out the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood collection is a set of five t-shirts. They say “Hello, Neighbor” on the front, printed over the trolley car shown in the show’s intro.

The back of each shirt features the show’s logo printed over the same trolley. Under that is printed one of the five cities that have a Todd Snyder Boutique: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville and Boston.

Availability and pricing

The Sperry x Todd Snyder x Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood collection is available now. The sneaker is sold by Todd Snyder and Sperry for $120, while Todd Snyder offers the sweater for $298 and the t-shirt for $78.
