NEIGHBORHOOD was founded in 1994 in Tokyo by Shinsuke Takizawa (known as Shin), a Japanese designer who had previously worked at Hysteric Glamour and various Harajuku design studios. The brand was an early collaborator with NIGO's A Bathing Ape and was one of the foundational labels of the 'Ura-Harajuku' (back-streets of Harajuku) movement that produced the modern Japanese streetwear scene alongside BAPE, UNDERCOVER, GOODENOUGH, and Hectic. The NEIGHBORHOOD vocabulary is built around three obsessions: vintage Americana (1950s-60s leather jackets, gas-station workwear, military surplus), motorcycle culture (the Harley reference is constant), and Japanese woodblock-print iconography. Takizawa's design language is more austere than BAPE's pop-cult instincts — his pieces look like garments unearthed from a Tokyo motorcycle club's archives rather than designed-from-scratch streetwear. The cross-and-bones logo, the heavy denim, the leather jackets, the perfecto-style motorcycle pieces — all are anchored in this archive-research approach. NEIGHBORHOOD operates from Aoyama, Tokyo, with flagship stores in Tokyo (Aoyama main store), Osaka, and Hong Kong. The brand has had a long-running creative partnership with adidas Originals (NEIGHBORHOOD × adidas Originals), Vans (the Era and Old Skool reissues), and Stüssy (the long collaboration that defined late-1990s streetwear cross-pollination). Takizawa remains designer-in-chief 30 years on. Few brands have so consistently maintained a research-anchored design practice across three decades of streetwear cycles.

How to buy from China

Direct China shipping unconfirmed

Direct mainland China shipping from the official JP store is unconfirmed, so the practical route is a Japan proxy-buy or a multi-brand retailer (e.g. HBX) that ships to China.

Shop Secondhand

Archive and rare Neighborhood pieces mostly circulate on the resale market. Japanese sites don't ship to China — buy via a proxy like Buyee; most Western sites ship internationally or are reachable with a US/EU forwarder.
