AURALEE

AURALEE was founded in 2015 in Tokyo by Ryota Iwai, a textile-driven designer who had spent the previous decade working in Japanese knitwear and fabric development. The brand's thesis from the first collection was specific: design clothes from the textile up rather than the silhouette down — sourcing or commissioning the finest possible cottons, wools, and merinos, and then engineering garments that let the cloth itself become the design statement. The AURALEE vocabulary settled around several signatures: ultra-fine merino oversized cardigans, hand-numbered cotton finewale corduroys, deadstock-grade hand-finished suiting, and a chalk-and-cream colour palette of remarkable subtlety. Iwai works directly with Japanese mills in Bishu and Imabari, and many of the brand's fabrics are produced specifically for AURALEE in limited annual runs. Collaborations with New Balance (the M2002R AURALEE), Salomon (the XT-6 AURALEE), and BEAMS have positioned the brand within both Japanese craft and global streetwear conversations. The brand operates a single flagship store in Aoyama, Tokyo, plus a growing wholesale presence at Norse Store, Dover Street Market, SSENSE, and HAVEN. AURALEE remains independent. Iwai continues as sole creative director. Few Japanese brands of the past decade have built such a recognisable textile identity, and few have made fabric itself the brand's most-Instagrammable feature.
