Awaylee was founded in Shanghai in the late 2010s by a team of Chinese designers trained between Central Saint Martins, Parsons, and Shanghai's Donghua University, with the explicit project of building a Chinese women's contemporary label that could operate at the same fabric and construction quality as European mid-market houses without leaning on European visual codes. The name—a phonetic Anglicization of the Chinese 阿威, suggesting both "away" and "lee" as a feminine modifier—was deliberately chosen to be illegible to neither audience while belonging to both.
The Awaylee vocabulary built up around feminine tailoring with subtle architectural distortion: blazers with shifted shoulder seams, trousers cut from Japanese double-cloth wool with origami-pleated waistbands, knits in cashmere-silk blends woven on Inner Mongolian mills, and dresses that referenced Republican-era Shanghai cheongsam construction without ever literally citing it. The label avoided the dragon-and-cloud iconography that defined an earlier wave of Chinese designer fashion, instead embedding Chinese-ness through silhouette, drape, and seasonal references to Song Dynasty ink painting or Ming-era furniture geometry that registered only on second look.
Stocked through Shanghai's design-led multi-brand boutiques—Triple-Major, ALTER, and the Réel Department Store luxury floor—Awaylee built a customer base of Chinese creative-class women in their late twenties through forties who wanted Chinese design without exotic styling. The brand's quiet international stockist push into Hong Kong's Joyce, Seoul's Boon the Shop, and Tokyo's Restir during the early 2020s positioned it as part of the broader emergence of Chinese contemporary fashion as a self-confident category that didn't need Western validation to function, even as Western validation arrived anyway through Vogue China editorials and Browns Fashion picks.
