Brain Dead
Brain Dead was founded in Los Angeles in 2014 by Kyle Ng and Ed Davis as a deliberate experiment in graphic-driven streetwear that pulled from punk, hardcore, 1960s Japanese counterculture, comic books, and underground film. The earliest products were t-shirts and graphic accessories produced in tiny runs; within a few years the brand had grown into a full clothing line, a homeware practice, a film production company (Brain Dead Studios in Los Angeles' Fairfax district), and a coffee operation.
The Brain Dead vocabulary is aggressively graphic-led: hand-drawn illustrations, cult-film references (Brain Dead Studios actively curates a repertory cinema), psychedelic colour palettes, sometimes deliberately ugly typography, and a sustained dialogue with skateboarding, BMX, and underground music. Long-running collaborations with The North Face, Reebok, Coca-Cola, Lego, Oakley, Carhartt WIP, and Vans have positioned Brain Dead as one of the most prolific collaboration platforms in contemporary streetwear.
The brand remains independent and Los Angeles-based, with the Fairfax retail space (which combines the storefront, the cinema, the café, and exhibition programming) serving as both the flagship and the operational headquarters. Ng and Davis continue to co-direct. Few brands have so naturally extended their visual identity beyond clothing — into film, café culture, publishing, and serious curatorial practice.
