Carhartt was founded in Detroit in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt to make workwear for the men building America's railroads — duck canvas overalls, blanket-lined chore coats, brown duck vests. For a century it remained a quiet American workwear company. The European story is different. In 1989 the Salzgeber family in Switzerland acquired the rights to distribute Carhartt in Europe and gradually built a separate brand, Carhartt Work In Progress, that filtered the parent's product canon through skate, graffiti, hip-hop, and electronic music sensibilities. That editorial filter became the brand's identity. Through the 1990s and 2000s, Carhartt WIP cultivated relationships with European skate and music scenes (the WIP Skate Tour, Carhartt Heritage music releases, long collaborations with Slam Jam and Patta) that the original Carhartt corporate office in Michigan would never have orchestrated. The Active Jacket, the Detroit Jacket, and the iconic logo-tape script became European streetwear vocabulary. Today Carhartt WIP operates a parallel reality to its American parent. Same factories in many cases, same heritage codes, but a wildly different cultural footprint — and a successful retail and distribution presence in roughly 60 countries. The two companies remain legally separate. Few brands have demonstrated so clearly that workwear's strongest cultural lift can come from outside the work it was originally designed for.
