Cav Empt (often stylised C.E or Cav Empt, derived from the Latin Caveat Emptor — 'buyer beware') was founded in 2011 in Tokyo by Sk8thing (the prolific graphic designer behind A Bathing Ape, Billionaire Boys Club, Human Made, Neighborhood graphics through the 1990s-2000s) and Toby Feltwell (the former Maharishi and BAPE business operator). The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a small-batch, anonymously-marketed, image-saturated streetwear line that read as the heir to the Ura-Harajuku tradition without the celebrity-anchored attention of its precursors. The Cav Empt vocabulary settled around several signatures: heavyweight cotton tees and crewnecks printed with deliberately ambiguous found-image graphics (Hong Kong CCTV screenshots, manga panels, 1990s magazine spreads, Soviet-era propaganda fragments), the COMM coach jacket, the C.E mountain parka, and a colour palette anchored to washed black, grey, and ecru. Production is overwhelmingly Japanese. Drops are released through the brand's own webstore and a small set of select stockists with no celebrity press push. The brand is independent and held by Sk8thing and Feltwell. Cav Empt operates a single Tokyo location (the brand's office in Shibuya which sells limited stock) plus international wholesale through Dover Street Market (a particularly close relationship), Antonioli, LN-CC, GR8, and a small set of additional carefully chosen retailers. Few Tokyo brands of the 2010s have built such a culturally specific image-anchored vocabulary while remaining so deliberately under-promoted.
