Rei Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1969 and presented her first Paris collection in 1981. That debut — a monochrome show of black, asymmetric, deliberately distressed garments — was so opposed to the era's body-conscious glamour that Western critics labeled it 'Hiroshima chic'. Kawakubo was unbothered: she had announced a new grammar for clothing, one built on void, rupture, and the dignity of the unfinished. The house she built is less a brand than a federation of practices. Junya Watanabe, Tao Kurihara, Kei Ninomiya — all developed under her wing before launching their own lines under the COMME umbrella. The famously austere Tokyo headquarters in Aoyama, the Dover Street Market retail concept (now in seven global cities), and Adrian Joffe's parallel role as CEO and creative steward have turned the company into one of the most influential operating systems in luxury fashion. Fifty-five years in, COMME continues to set the avant-garde north star while quietly running an enormous, profitable wholesale business through diffusion lines like PLAY (the heart-and-eyes logo, designed by Filip Pagowski), HOMME, SHIRT, and BLACK. Kawakubo, now in her eighties, still oversees every collection. Few designers have built so much over so long without ever softening their original premise.
