ERL

ERL was founded in 2018 in Venice, California by Eli Russell Linnetz, a filmmaker and creative director who had previously worked closely with Kanye West (directing music videos and the Yeezy seasonal campaigns) and shot for the Donda 2 visual programme. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a Southern-California-anchored menswear vocabulary that read as a direct heir to Venice Beach skate, surf, and Californian-youth-culture iconography of the 1970s-1990s, with a deliberately faded, sun-bleached, low-key aesthetic. The ERL vocabulary settled around several specific elements: bleached and stonewashed sweatshirts and hoodies, washed-cotton chinos and corduroys, embroidered Hawaiian shirts referencing 1970s LA hippie iconography, the iconic ERL star-graphic, deliberately oversized fits with deliberate proportional distortion, and a colour palette anchored to faded ecru, washed pink, washed denim blue, sun-bleached olive, and the recurring ERL ivory base. The Dior Men collaboration capsule (S/S 2023, designed in partnership with Kim Jones) brought the brand into the Paris luxury conversation. The brand is independent and held by Linnetz. ERL operates a flagship in Venice, California (Abbot Kinney Boulevard), plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury department stores. Few US menswear brands of the post-2015 generation have built such a culturally specific Californian-youth-aesthetic vocabulary while becoming integrated into the European luxury conversation.
